The Ministry of the Interior will soon submit a legislative proposal to Parliament aimed at imposing harsher and more deterrent penalties on unlicensed firearm owners, Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced.
“In the near future, our ministry will submit a bill to parliament. There will be proposals to curb penalties related to carrying unlicensed weapons,” Yerlikaya said at a meeting in the northwestern Tekirdag province.
He noted that the passage of the proposal “will encourage the public to regulate themselves.”
Erikaya’s remarks came in the wake of a recent spike in criminal incidents in the country.
In another move following the shocking events that dominated the national agenda, the Ministry of Justice announced reforms to the punishment enforcement system, insisting that offenders, even for minor offenses, will be sentenced to prison. He argued that this addressed the widespread perception of impunity in society.
According to a report prepared by an NGO, a total of 2,500 people were killed in Turkiye last year in incidents involving personal firearms, most of which were unlicensed.
