According to a recent report featuring the places most Americans want to travel to on vacation, choosing Maine makes perfect sense.
But here’s the irony. Although Maine is called “Vacationland,” we often leave our vacation spot and go on vacation somewhere else. It’s funny to think that even Maine might be looking for a getaway outside of a state known for its vacations.

But how do we decide which vacation destinations are the most popular, especially for those here in Maine?
Thrillist’s report, “Most Popular Vacation Destinations by State,” uses social media and Google data to analyze popular winter vacation spots. Cloudwards researchers tracked online searches and mentions to see where people in each state prefer to travel during the holidays. The research highlights that while everyone has a different idea of home, the places they want to escape to on vacation tend to be more similar than you might expect.

With that in mind, what are the top vacation destinations for Miners? Where are people here trying to go?
According to Thrillist’s report, “Most Popular Vacation Destinations by State,” the most popular domestic destination for Maines is Boston, Massachusetts. This is not surprising considering Boston is New England’s largest city.

But Thrillist didn’t stop at domestic travel. What are the most international destinations for Maine people?
Quebec City takes the top spot as the most popular international destination for residents of Maine and the New England states. This is also based on a report from Thrillist.
