From Williamsburg to Philadelphia, comedian Rachel Coster goes where no one dares: the bedrooms of men in their 20s and 30s. Boy Room (@boyroomshow), an account with around 175,000 TikTok followers, explores the horrors of young men’s interior design sensibilities.
I’m not kidding either. A 31-year-old Philadelphia man named Danny decorates his home with animal carcasses. Jerome, 32, who lives in New York City’s Chinatown neighborhood, doesn’t have a duvet cover. Henry, 27, of South Philadelphia, has a cardboard wall separating his bedroom from his bathroom. Other common features: dark blue bed sheets, unmade beds, floors covered with clothes.
Even without the shocking video evidence recorded on the TikTok show, many women have already complained about encounters in Murray Hill apartments with sagging walls, parties at male friends’ houses, or the mess, dirt, and mess of a man’s residence. It’s exposed to questionable design choices. Soon after they moved in with their boyfriends.
For Kenzie Elizabeth, the fear the boys’ room brought her started at an early age with her siblings. “I grew up with a lot of brothers, so unfortunately I’ve seen it all. I hope it gets better, but it rarely gets better. In fact, I don’t know what I’d do in a clean man’s house.” I can tell you I’ve been there a few times. It’s so shocking that it’s etched in my memory,” Elizabeth told me.
Since starting her online presence with her YouTube channel 10 years ago, Elizabeth has launched a podcast called House Guest on Dear Media, the largest marketplace for women in audio, and is the founder of home lifestyle brand Friend of Mine There is also.
To be fair, “Boy Room” features some pretty salacious and exaggerated examples of the men’s bedroom. (I have never encountered stuffed animals, thawed bagged meatballs, or framed rat tails in a man’s bedroom.)
However, there are still interior design mistakes that fool many men. For example, did you know that the color of your sheets can tell a lot about your behavior? Or maybe your girlfriend really hates your gaming settings? Whether you’re bringing them in or courting someone who frequently comes over, you need to make sure your space is comfortable for women (where they don’t have to navigate the minefield of dirty socks in your room). You can install it on the floor without completely compromising your design preferences. To help you achieve this elegant and harmonious balance in your living space, I asked Elizabeth for some interior design advice, as well as recommendations for new home decor products you might want to consider for your space. I asked for some.
InsideHook: What do you think men get wrong when it comes to decorating their rooms?
Kenzie Elizabeth: I think men get it wrong when it comes to decorating their space because they don’t really have a vision for their space. They usually go buy something at Target and that’s it. They don’t try to make their space more home-like and stick to what they know (navy sheets, cold gray, etc.). Men tend to be less intentional with their space. Most of the stuff they put on the walls is stuff they just threw up there.
IH: Especially for men who are dating/in a relationship/bringing a woman home, what kind of design elements and products should a man have in his space to make the woman feel comfortable without completely compromising the man’s tastes? what? ?
KE: Interior design tips that appeal to both genders would make for a good signature home fragrance. We recommend placing a large candle on the coffee table. Wicker is somewhere in between and is very gender neutral. A sturdy, thick blanket is also comfortable and extremely versatile.
IH: Similarly, it can be difficult for cohabiting couples to compromise on interior design. Do you have any advice for men who are struggling with compromise?
KE: I think you have to pick your battles. If it’s something really important to you, you might find a cute basket to hide your ugly gaming system. If it’s not that important to you, let it go.
IH: Are there any home brands you recommend men shop for?
KE: I personally love home brands like CB2, West Elm, Container Store, Lulu and Georgia, and Six Penny. H&M Home and Zara Home are both highly underrated and very affordable, making them perfect for home decor for both men and women.
IH: Are there any obvious things you think men should avoid when organizing their homes?
KE: Stay away from those millennial gray and navy sheets and the cheap old furniture you’ve kept from college. Invest what you can in your space.
