RAPIDS CITY, South Dakota – More fall-like weather is expected this weekend, with subfreezing temperatures possible Sunday night and Monday morning. It’s important to prepare not only your plants and pipes, but also your four-legged friends for cold weather.
The Humane Society of the Black Hills (HSBH) encourages pet owners to consider how changes in the weather may affect their animals. Some pets, such as huskies, are built to withstand cold environments, while others, like domestic cats, are sensitive to the cold. No matter what breed or type of pet you have, it’s important to keep an eye on your pet during the cold season.
Kay Keeper, HSBH’s Outreach and Education Coordinator, said: “Also limit your time outside to about 15 minutes. ‘Cause think about if your bare feet were on the ground. How long will they last? So their exposure. It is very important to limit this and ensure protection from the elements.”
Keeper also suggests other precautions to prepare for the common cold, including:
Make sure your animal is microchipped Use a jacket and boots (if you don’t have boots, you can apply petroleum jelly to the soles of your pet’s paws) Keep your pet on a leash (where frost or snow prevents , as it can obscure the scents that help you get home)
For outdoor animals, Keeper recommends making sure they have adequate shelter from cold and strong winds. She advises adding blankets and using warm water bowls to prevent water from freezing.
HSBH also emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs that your pet is getting too cold. Symptoms include:
Trembling stiff tail with cold paws, ears, and nose slowing you down
Keeper recommends that if your animal shows signs of being excessively cold, bring it indoors and wrap it in a warm blanket before calling your veterinarian. However, avoid putting it directly into a hot bath. It can do more harm than good.
