What documents do I need to get a Real ID in California?
If you live in California and need to obtain a Real ID, you will need to provide several documents to prove your identity. The following documents are accepted.
A valid U.S. passport or passport card. An original or certified copy of a birth certificate issued by a U.S. state, city, or county office. Shortened or summarized versions will not be accepted. A valid permanent resident card. A foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and an approved I-94 form. Certificate of naturalization or U.S. citizenship. A certified birth certificate issued in a U.S. territory. An expired EAD with a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD) or Notice of Action (I-797 C) attached. A valid permanent resident card and Notice of Action (I-797 C) or Notice of Approval (I-797). Foreign Birth Certificate or Consular Report of Foreign Birth of a U.S. Citizen. A foreign passport with a “Processed for I-551” stamp. Document confirming eligibility for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Steps to get a Real ID in California

After submitting your documents online, please save the confirmation code provided upon completion. You will need this code to make an appointment at a DMV office.

What happens if I don’t update my ID?
