NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — North Myrtle Beach nonprofit animal shelter Kind Keeper has purchased more than 10 acres of land on Water Tower Road in Longs, S.C., so it can build a new facility. .
The multi-million dollar project is just a 13-minute drive from the current shelter.
The animal shelter houses about 52 dogs and cats but needs more space.
The nonprofit has been operating at its current location since 2015 and can only house about 50 animals.
Brittney Houser is the shelter’s events coordinator, and she said all they have to do is break ground.
Hauser explained: We are waiting for the final permission and everything else is complete. We already have the drawings and have a contractor in place. ”

Houser said all of the funding for the project comes from fundraising and donations, and he hopes to open the new location by 2026.
“We’re going to be in a building that’s three times our current capacity, so we’ll be able to help more dogs and cats, because we’re a no-kill facility. You know you can’t find a room until you adopt an animal,” she said.
Adoption counselor Jennifer Jones said the shelter will bring many resources to the community.
“We’re also going to open a spay/neuter clinic there, so we’ll be able to help with that, which is a huge thing around here. And we’ll be able to adopt out more animals. “We get 10 to 20 requests a day to adopt animals because we can do more,” Jones said.
ABC 15 has not yet been told the exact date the facility will open.
The shelter will hold its next event on Oct. 8 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, where it will put senior-friendly dogs up for adoption.
