Remember last year when all we talked about was Wicked costars Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s controversial romance and their subsequent divorce? What you may have forgotten is that Slater is a father and it’s been a while since he’s talked about it.
But before we get into that, you should know that Slater and ex-wife Lily Jay were together from 2012 to 2023, and were high school sweethearts before then. The two married in 2018 and welcomed a son in the summer of 2022. Slater then filed for divorce in 2023, which was finalized last month, and they are said to have been trying hard to co-parent. In GQ’s cover story, Slater spoke about fatherhood, what he wants his son to do in life, and what co-parenting with Jay is like.
The Wicked star told the media that becoming a father is “the best thing in the world,” adding that co-parenting is “an interesting thing to get through as a new parent.”
“There’s nothing I want to do more than show him pictures and talk about him because he’s the best and the light of my life,” Slater added. “But I also want to give him the opportunity to meet the world in his own way…not in my words, but in an analog way.”

A source told OK that in late 2023, during the middle of a messy divorce, Slater “desperately” wanted to co-parent their son. He allegedly contacted Jay every day to talk to his son. In an effort to remain a father, he even took his son to London while he was filming Wicked. The source also claimed that Jay decided a co-parenting relationship was best for their son. So, as of October 2024, it appears Slater and Jay are moving forward with co-parenting.
