Erica Synths EDU DIY BBD is a new DIY analog delay module for Eurorack with a twist on clocks, in collaboration with Moritz Klein.
Eurorack is not a cheap business. That’s why many people are going the DIY route, soldering modules together and exploring the modular world at a lower cost. Of course, soldering skills are required. If you are still in the early stages, you can learn with the help of Erica Synths, for example.
The company offers its EDU DIY series of Eurorack modules as kits that allow you to learn step-by-step how the circuit works and how to solder it from scratch. Their latest addition is the BBD delay with a unique clocking twist.
Erica Synth EDU DIY BBD
The new EDU DIY BBD is an analog delay module based on BBD integrated circuits. It features classic delay controls such as gain in, time, feedback, and dry/wet. Yes, this is the classic thing you would expect from any delay effect. But Moritz Klein also made some clever additions.
First, you can switch between two different delay ranges: short and long. This makes the module much more flexible as more results can be achieved. Moritz added a second cool feature to the BBD-based circuit.
In addition to the time CV input, there’s a mysterious “Inhibit CV” socket that adds a unique twist to the watch. When you connect a gate signal to Inhibit CV, the high gate disconnects the clock signal from the BBD chip and stops the effect in the track.
At this patch point, as soon as the gate goes low, the clock is restarted and the BBD circuit returns to normal operation. Erica Synths promises that this feature will allow players to add rhythm to effects and perform other interesting pranks.
This module can achieve a variety of results, from classic delay-based effects, slapback echoes, trailing reverberations, flanger-like sounds to broken spheres.
Like previous EDU releases, the Erica Synths EDU DIY BBD is 100% DIY and sold as a kit. It comes with a nice illustrated assembly manual that provides deep insight into the functionality of each part of the circuit you are building.
first impression
This is another great new Erica Synths EDU DIY module. What I like about BBD is that it includes additional features such as Inhibit CV. If you’re interested in the DIY world, this series is for you. Get both theory and practice in one package.
