Barry Diller’s memoir, scheduled to be published next spring, covers a life that could fill up multiple volumes.
Simon & Schuster announced Wednesday that “Who Knew,” about Diller’s rise from the mailroom of the William Morris Agency to the pinnacle of wealth and influence, will be released on May 20. His accomplishments are numerous, ranging from producing Raiders of the Lost Ark and Saturday Night Fever to founding the Fox Broadcasting Company.
“I have a background in storytelling and I thought my story would be a good yarn if I could write it myself and tell the truth. It would be published for others to judge. We welcome them and, if possible, enjoy them,” Diller, 82, said in a statement.
He will also write about his marriage to Diane von Furstenberg and his current position as chairman and CEO of IAC, a holding company whose brands include Tinder, Expedia, People and Travel + Leisure.
“Barry Diller’s books are about more than business. This is a shockingly honest account of his personal journey, unconventional love story, and fascinating tour through show business and digital media.” It’s a fun record,” Simon & Schuster CEO and book editor Jonathan Karp said in a statement. “Readers can tell when an author is telling the truth. Who Knew is not only written with fun and candor on every page, but is packed with insights about our lives at work.”
Financial terms of Mr. Diller’s book deal were not disclosed. He was represented by Robert Barnett, a Washington lawyer whose clients range from Barbra Streisand to former President Bill Clinton. Earlier this year, “Who Knew” was listed as a work by Alfred A. Knopf on Amazon.com, but it has since been removed. When asked about the apparent change in publisher, Barnett declined to comment.
