Overview (spoilers below):
When Ju-kyung sees Su-ho with Soo-jin, she realizes that she is avoiding him at all costs. The second mission also requires her attention, and Ju-kyung gets help from none other than Seo-joon.
Our view:
Just when you think everything is going well for Ju-kyung, that bitch Soo-jin ruins everything. That’s what happened at the end of last week’s episode, where Ju-kyung caught Soo-jin hugging Su-ho. Convinced that Soo-jin and Su-ho are dating, Ju-kyung decides to distance herself from Su-ho so as not to get involved. Of course, this could be Soo-jin’s latest plot to kick her out of the competition after losing to Ju-kyung in the dance mission. What’s wrong with suffering losses like a mature and responsible person? But after watching the episode, we learn there’s more to Soo-jin than we’re led to believe.
The real reason for Soo-jin’s immature behavior is that she is being abused by her alcoholic mother and as a result Su-ho comforts her. It is said that parents’ actions can influence their children and as a result, they may become bullies to hide their actual pain. Unfortunately, Ju-kyung was unaware of the situation as she spent almost the entire episode avoiding Su-ho in a comical way. There is also a problem with the second mission of the contest. Jukyung needs to stylize her uniform in a gorgeous yet somehow kinky way. However, Ju-kyung accidentally leaves her bag behind while running away from Su-ho, and Soo-jin steals her clothes and claims them as her own. Thankfully, Ju-kyung-san comes up with a good backup plan just in time to turn in the stylized boy’s uniform.
This episode overall wants us to sympathize with Soo-jin because of her mother’s abuse. But after what she did to get an edge on the competition, I hoped she and her mother would experience the karma they deserve sooner or later. Aside from the comedy that overshadows the drama, I’ll admit that True Beauty does a decent job of making you feel attached to its characters, especially when it comes to themes like bullying and abuse. The story beats may not land as well as I expected, but I can tell you this. Soo-jin’s drunken mother needs serious help.
