Our view:
For some reason, Crunchyroll’s website doesn’t list the title and description for episode 9 of True Beauty. Luckily, I found out the title of the episode on another website before I watched it. While it doesn’t completely impact the episode, it did leave questions about Crunchyroll’s work schedule regarding the website’s configuration. But it’s not as bad as Soo-jin trying to trick herself to get to the top and humiliate Ju-kyung forever. Even Su-ah, one of Ju-kyung’s friends, is just as angry with that woman as I am. But until she finds out what Soo-jin is planning next, Ju-kyung has another problem she can’t ignore. It’s your first slumber party with your new friends.
This may seem like another innocuous episode designed as a filler like the festival episode, but it’s not. In “The Truth Game,” Ju-kyung is finally forced to make a “life-changing” decision to show her true self to her new friends, thanks to a harmless game called “The Truth Game.” Naturally, she still worries that her new friends will turn against her if she reveals her “ugly” side. However, when Ju-kyung learns that Su-ho likes Ju-kyung without makeup, she confidently reveals her “big secret” to her friend. Naturally, the episode ends with her friends accepting Ju-kyung as her true self. Even though the pacing was still a bit hectic and the ending was predictably corny, it’s no lie that this episode used elements of a slumber party to further Ju-kyung’s character development. But it also reinforces the show’s message of confidence and acceptance, despite its below-average emotional depth. So the question here is whether everyone else can accept Ju-kyung for her natural self without feeling bad about her.
