PK Murugan, head of the neurology department at Government Rajaji Hospital, said strokes among young people are increasing due to various lifestyle changes such as consumption of foods high in saturated fat, lack of physical activity and sleep disorders.
Dr Murugan, speaking at an awareness rally held at GRH on the occasion of World Stroke Day on Tuesday, said these negative factors were due to the sedentary lifestyle of young people due to the nature and location of their work.
He highlighted the role of alteplase, a thrombolytic drug that can significantly improve recovery outcomes when given to patients within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. “By using this treatment, patients have a better chance of dissolving the blood clot and recovering,” he said.
Resident Medical Officer S. Saravanan said students and people from all walks of life should get into the habit of exercising every morning. “People who don’t have time in the morning should at least exercise or play games in the evening.Everyone should spend at least an hour physically reading a book. It helps prevent non-communicable diseases,” he said.
Dr. Saravanan said that sleep disorders can lead to diabetes, blood pressure and obesity, but practicing exercise and reading can help you get a better night’s sleep. Strokes don’t happen suddenly. That raises a warning signal. Therefore, by taking these precautions, you can prevent it, he added.
