The DIY SOS group have been working around Barnstaple since last Monday and are working tirelessly to achieve this enterprising initiative, which will be kept confidential until broadcast on the BBC.
More than 100 local tradespeople have come together to support the initiative, providing everything from scaffolding and waste disposal to carpentry, plastering, electrical work, painting, groundwork, bricklaying, bathroom installation, tiling and more. We provided a wide range of services, ranging from complex technical expertise.
Switched On Electrical’s neighbor Sam Raymont, who lives just down the road from the site, also volunteered.
Sam said: “I live a stone’s throw from my customers and know Lucy and Jan very well.”
“I feel really sad for the girls and I just wanted to help them,” he added with compassion.
During the renovation, the team faced the added challenge of sweltering heat, which put a strain on workers.
DIY SOS leader Mark Miller commented on the unexpected weather conditions: “We didn’t expect it to be this hot. It’s great and I’m not complaining, but everyone is completely exhausted.”
He humorously mentioned the effects of the heat wave. “We all thought, ‘Oh, the sun is out, it’s going to be great weather,’ but people are dropping like flies.”
Mark also explained how the crew coped. “They work for an hour and then they go in the shade and try to cool down a little bit.”
Thankfully, two community food companies made sure the workers were stocked with ice cream and drinks.
