Valentine’s Day is just a few weeks away, and kids are so excited to give this year’s Valentine’s Day gifts to their classmates. We love DIY time in our house, and these heart crayons were a big hit a few years ago. The best news is that it’s super easy to make, inexpensive, practical, and even kids can help make it.
I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about what I’m going to do with my Valentine’s Day gifts for Marlowe’s school class. This year I made something really fun. It was very easy to make, so I thought I’d share it with you in hopes of giving you some inspiration. These DIY crayon heart favors are super easy to make and can be made using broken crayon pieces. This is like the ultimate recycled, repurposed Valentine’s Day craft.
I also like the fact that it’s a Valentine’s Day gift for kids that isn’t candy. Personally, I don’t mind my kids eating candy on Valentine’s Day, but I know other parents feel differently, so I want to make sure they’re respectful of everyone in the class. I think so. These festive and useful crayons are a great compromise.
Step 1
unwrap a crayon
Preheat oven to 230°F. If your crayons don’t already have paper packaging, start breaking them into 1/2-inch pieces. If you are using new crayons, use a knife to carefully cut the paper and peel the paper away from the crayon. (I spent an hour unwrapping crayons and making paper cuts under my fingernails until Kyle came into the kitchen and was like, “Baby!” lol).
Step 2
Fill the mold and bake
Fill the mold with colorful crayons and bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Do not overcook! You want the crayon to melt “just”, but not so much that the colors mix together and form a crayon sludge.
Step 3
nice
Move the mold to a heat-safe location and let it cool for 1 to 2 hours. Once completely cooled, remove the heart crayon from the mold.
Step 4
address
Place each in a clear cellophane bag and tie with a tag. I wrote this on the tag: “You make my life more colorful. xoxo Marlowe”
