Día de Muertos is a Mexican tradition that celebrates deceased loved ones, including pets.
San Diego County Animal Services provides a public ofrenda, or altar, to celebrate all pets.
“This is a way for our staff, volunteers and community members to bring in photos of their beloved pets. We celebrate and honor them and, hopefully, they come to visit us too. , we hope to see the animals up for adoption,” said Johnna, on duty at the Department of Animal Services.
She said this is the first year they will be offering a render to the public, and she hopes this will lead to new adoption and fostering opportunities.
Like many shelters in the county, Duty said they have a large number of animals up for adoption.
From puppies to kittens and even rabbits and pigs.
“We have a lot of animals available. We looked at our inventory and we have over 150 dogs and over 200 animals,” she said. “Many of them have really great personalities, so they might be a great fit for you and your family.”
All County Animal Services pets are spayed and neutered and may include food and accessories.
Duty said if adoption isn’t an option right now, foster care and volunteering are always other ways to give back. You can go for walks and pet the cats. We also have dog accommodations.”If you just want to take your dog for a few hours, there are programs for outings to parks, shopping areas, beaches, etc. ”
The mandate added that the department plans to waive adoption fees, referring to the Día de Muertos pet celebration.
Until the end of this month, stores in Carlsbad and Bonita are asking the public to bring in photos of pets that are no longer with them.
KPBS is also celebrating Día de Muertos with a digital communal altar. Viewers have until October 23rd to submit their memories with their loved ones to be featured in the digital ofrenda. Click here for more information.
