WATERBURY, Conn. (TNND) – Connecticut Rep. Jahana Hayes will hold meetings in Chicago and Martha’s Vineyard this summer as the state deals with devastating flooding, according to federal election filings. In August, heavy rains caused deadly flooding across the state, killing at least two people and forcing the evacuation of more than 100 by search and rescue teams. Gov. Ned Lamont declared a state of emergency as Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, lamented the “torrent of destruction.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Hayes spent $6,384.91 on a stay at Chicago’s luxurious Sheraton Grand while attending the Democratic National Convention, filings show. During her stay, she offered her condolences to the people of the state in videos taken from across the country.
“My heart goes out to all those affected. I worked with all local agencies to do everything I could to get them as much relief as possible,” she lamented. “When the updates (of the storm) started on the news, I tried to book a flight back to Connecticut, but as you know, there are delays and cancellations and the flight was just booked.”
Congressman Hayes then visited Martha’s Vineyard and splurged on luxuries, including a stay at a waterfront resort for more than $2,000. The representative also spent more than $1,700 on meals at upscale restaurants serving oysters, caviar and lobster, and dropped $1,635 on a rental car.
The New York Post first reported that nearly $13,000 was spent while Connecticut endured flooding. Representative Hayes’ office did not respond to a request for comment on the cost when contacted by email from the National News Desk.
He is being challenged for the House seat by Republican candidate George Logan, a former state senator. The Logan campaign did not respond to a request for comment on Hayes’ spending spree.
