The University of Washington and Lee University will host their first Policy Forum in Washington, D.C., October 10-11, bringing together more than 100 alumni, current students, and guests to discuss key issues at the intersection of politics, policy, and the private sector. The forum began with a welcome reception on October 10th, featuring remarks from Tony DeMartino ’89, founding partner of Paras Advisors, who shared insights from his extensive experience in innovative technology and the national security sector. did.
The next morning, attendees enjoyed a networking breakfast, followed by a series of panel discussions designed to engage attendees on pressing topics. The first panel focused on cybersecurity and featured Alison Jetton ’06L, David Shugart ’87, Jenny Stone ’99, and moderator Will McKee ’81. This session sparked an important discussion on the current state of cybersecurity and its impact on society.
A panel discussion on trade and economics followed, moderated by economics professor Katie Shester, and included insights from Dave Vohigian ’92, Charles Capito ’07L, and John Schindler ’94. Participants gained valuable perspective on the complexity of trade policy and its impact on economic growth.
Col. Tom Greenwood ’77, a research fellow at the Institute for Defense Analyses, gave the keynote address. His primary role focuses on strategy, defense policy and joint warfare. His extensive experience includes leading peacekeeping and humanitarian operations in areas such as the Philippines, Haiti, Sierra Leone, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, as well as counterinsurgency operations in Iraq.
The lunch featured table topics that encouraged discussion on a variety of topics, including the Russia/Ukraine conflict, the U.S. military, and emerging technology and infrastructure. These discussions encouraged collaboration and sharing of ideas among participants.
The forum concluded with a 2025 Outlook panel highlighting the evolving political landscape and future policy challenges. Moderated by Associate Professor of Political Science Brian Alexander, speakers included Scott Arsenault ’92, Jennifer Frost ’99, and Joy Lee ’12L.
