Just when you thought the City Commission campaign couldn’t get any worse, City Commission candidate Dot Inman Johnson publicly criticized her opponent, City Commissioner Curtis Richardson, for his parenting.
Inman Johnson wrote in a recent social media post: “As a ‘father of a girl’, my opponents should fight even harder for women’s rights.”
This post by the Inman Johnson campaign is an attempt to mislead voters regarding Curtis Richerson’s position on abortion rights. Throughout her long political career, Richardson has consistently supported abortion.
However, Richardson has chosen not to support politically driven city resolutions related to abortion, stating that “my history of supporting women’s rights is well documented.” I believe women have the right to choose. It’s a personal choice. But this is a problem for the Florida Legislature. What we have to say will not be heard there. ”
Now, Inman Johnson and her progressive allies (including City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow) are trying to convince voters that Richardson does not support abortion rights, a position that could cost Richardson votes due to the partisan makeup of the city’s districts.
These latest efforts mark the first time Richardson’s opponents have mentioned his family in campaign attacks. Traditionally, politicians’ families have been off-limits when it comes to political attacks.
Richardson is married and has two daughters. The two daughters are reportedly from Florida and are the first black sisters to attend the Naval Academy.
