Chris Pine recently published his first children’s book, When Diggs the Dog Met Zulu the Squirrel: A Short Story About Short Tails. This picture book, illustrated by Chuck Groening, tells the story of Diggs, a dog, and Zulu, a squirrel, both of whom have their own struggles with anxiety. As the story unfolds, the two soon realize that they are not all that different from each other.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Pine talks about writing her first children’s book and the message she wants to send to parents and children through her book. The 44-year-old actor also hopes that “When Diggs the Dog and Zulu the Squirrel Met: A Short Story About Short Tails” can solve a common problem that many parents face.
Chris Pine hopes his new book will be fun for parents and children
Chris Pine hopes his children’s books will not only be fun for children, but their parents as well. The “Star Trek” actor spoke about certain parenting issues in an interview with PEOPLE. According to Pine, most parents have to read the same books over and over again to their children before bedtime or at other times, which can be boring. The actor also hopes his new book will resonate with parents and be fun to read to their children.
Pine said, “So much of the impetus for writing, so much of the joy of writing, was thinking about parents reading it.” She continued, “I remember being obsessed with books as a child, so my dad would read them to me over and over again.”
The actor then revealed that although he is not a parent yet, he has spoken to some parents who are “tired of reading Book X over and over again.” Pine revealed that this was his inspiration because “it’s great to write something that feels so delicious in your mouth.” He added: “They (children and their parents) will want to come back and explore again and again.”
