BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick County on Oct. 25 alleges county officials violated the First Amendment by improperly enforcing rules against political signs supporting Democratic candidates. announced that it is still under investigation.
The Brunswick County Democratic Party made the claim in a press release Oct. 7, saying the sign was installed in June and was about 10 feet tall. The party claims the 6-foot height limit for signs was enforced through a “cease and desist” order and $200 fine, but similar signs by Republicans were left alone.
Now, the county says administrators have met with the party to discuss the situation.
“The North Carolina Building Code requires a permit for signs over 6 feet in height, but since this sign was determined to be a political sign, it is considered a temporary sign and does not require a permit, but a permit is required. “It has been determined that this will be necessary and will be removed after the election,” the county statement said.
This is consistent with the party’s statement earlier this month that the county removed the signs on the condition that they be removed within 30 days after the election.
