Once a drab living room, the space now evokes a surprising sense of sophistication and comfort, thanks to Lauren Thorp of Bomboni Interior Design.
“This space really needed a little more character, character, and furniture to match the size of the room,” says Thorp, owner of Bomboni Interior Design. “The client wanted to display an original painting by their favorite local artist, Ann Molasky, that had previously hung in the room. So, to create a focal point for the painting, they wanted to display a built-in painting with a dramatic arch. I designed some of them.
Beautiful built-ins were constructed by Ross Noecker of RJN Custom Furnitures to flank the painting and camouflage existing prominences in the space.
“The power of custom-designed built-in functionality cannot be overstated,” says Thorp. “I love incorporating them into designs because they not only add a lot of functionality to a space, but they also add great interest and depth.”

A rich color spectrum including burgundy, tan, and brass adds to the dynamic look.
“I wanted to incorporate elements of the academia design style to contrast with the paintings without being too dark or moody,” says Thorpe. “We wanted to create a space that balanced modern and traditional elements, combining clean lines with classic details like arched built-ins and plush velvet upholstery.”
Modern lighting, contemporary textures, and boldly patterned pillows created a fresh yet timeless end result.
“To be honest, I’m a little jealous,” Thorp says. “I would love to have this room in my home. This design not only reflects my client’s style, but also my personal style. In the design world, these two Powers don’t always align.”
