So, what does the face of menopause look like? Well, it turns out that menopause (the 1-10 years before your last period) causes a lot of skin-related concerns before you hit the big M.
Estrogen plays a central role in collagen production, skin elasticity and thickness, and promoting healthy blood vessels. As estrogen levels drop during perimenopause, your skin begins to show signs of dryness, dullness, wrinkles, sagging, and even acne. “Pimples that appear out of nowhere can make you feel like a teenager, and they can also make you feel like an old person with extreme dryness,” says New York dermatologist Doris Day, MD.
When it comes to applying makeup to depressed skin, it’s no surprise that minimalist trends inspired by Gen Z also work for previous generations. Try a soufflé-like foundation like Chantecaille Future Skin ($149) to create dewy skin. Water-based concealers like Kosas Revealer Concealer ($50) are great for lines and wrinkles around the eyes. A creamy blush is a softer option than a powder blush (we love Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush, $80), and opt for a lip-plumping gloss like Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Big Lip Plumpgasm ($54).
