BARCS warns scammers targeting missing pet owners
BARCS warns of scammers targeting missing pet owners 00:15
BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Animal Shelter is warning the public about scammers impersonating BARCS employees and targeting people with missing pets.
According to BARCS, scammers are using the official phone number 410-396-4695 to scam people who post lost pet information on social media.
According to BARCS, scammers falsely claim to have found a missing pet, state that the pet is in critical condition and requires immediate treatment, and send urgent payments via CashApp, Venmo, PayPal, or similar apps. They say they are putting pressure on people to do so.
BARCS says it will never request payment over the phone.
Those who received the call should not send money and should report the incident to BARCS at info@BARCS.org.
“We ask everyone to remain vigilant and help protect our communities from these scams,” BARCS said.
