Starting Thursday, several locations across the city will be bringing unopened dry or wet cat and dog food to willingly donate to those affected by Hurricane Helen who don’t have the means to feed their pets. It has become an extradition center for people who are From approximately 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday, there will be spots around the city where local animal-loving donors can drop off pet food.
These locations are:
WRDW News 12, 1226 Gray Way, accepting pet food donations Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Garnet Johnson Mayoral Campaign Headquarters, 4104 Windsor Spring Rd., Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art On Broad, 1016 Broad St., Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. Le Chat Noir Theater, 304 8th St., Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m.
Starting at noon Saturday, St. Paul’s Church, 605 Reynolds St. downtown, will serve as a distribution center for these donations, distributing bags of dog and cat food to those in need while supplies last. AAS sets aside one-third of donations for volunteers to deliver food to people who are unable to leave their homes, so those who are unable to leave their homes can call 311 for help arranging food deliveries .
More distribution centers will be opened across the city and AAS will announce these locations as soon as they are confirmed.
AAS expects more donations to arrive Saturday from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter in Canton, Ga., which has done its own work to support the Augusta shelter’s efforts, and from the Humane Society. Approximately six pallets of cat litter will be provided. AAS Director Crystal Escola explains:
“We’re not trying to force anyone in our community to donate, but we just heard from so many people saying, ‘How can we help?'” Escola said. “So this was just a way to give people the opportunity to donate if they wanted to.”
Columbia County also organized a donation drop for pets. Donors can drop off pet food and supplies at The Market, 1000 Market Street in Evans, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The county will eventually arrange to receive these donations.
