Prayagraj: Arthritis is rapidly increasing its impact, affecting not only the elderly but also the young, and the biggest reason for this is lifestyle changes. Long working hours, low-fiber, high-calorie junk food, weight gain, and lack of regular exercise all have a negative impact on young people. On the occasion of World Arthritis Day (October 12), TOI spoke to prominent orthopedic surgeons in the city to learn more about the disease. The concern is that even though many people choose knee replacement surgery, the pain often returns about 10 years later.
Dr KD Tripathi, a prominent orthopedic surgeon in the city, says there has been an alarming rise in arthritis cases in recent years. Although many patients choose knee replacement surgery, caring for the transplanted knee joint is more important than replacing the knee joint. “Have your doctor examine your replaced joint every year to ensure the problem is properly diagnosed,” he says. Reasons for revision include wear of the grafted knee after a period of time, loosening of the grafted knee, fractures around the grafted knee, and persistent pain or infection in the grafted knee.
Similarly, Dr. Naveen Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopedics, MLN Medical School, said, “One of the main reasons for the increase in arthritis cases among young people is due to how inactive many people’s lives have become. With so many jobs now, more and more people are desk-based, working from home and spending long hours on their phones or laptops, which means they often sit still for long periods of time and have poor posture. “It puts an extra strain on our joints, especially those in the knees, spine and hips, which causes them to wear out much faster than before,” he added. Regarding obesity and diet, doctors say that because fast food and processed foods are so common, many young people are gaining extra weight, which puts extra pressure on joints such as the knees and hips. He said that “This extra weight makes these joints more likely to break down over time, which can lead to conditions like osteoarthritis even in people who are not very old.”
Similarly, physical activity is very important to keep your joints healthy. “Continuous use of cell phones, computers, and video games puts strain on the small joints in the fingers, wrists, and shoulders. Over time, these repetitive movements can cause problems, especially in young people, such as rheumatoid arthritis. This condition can lead to arthritis,” Dr. Singh said. Doctors and health experts are now calling for increased awareness about arthritis in young people. They recommend simple lifestyle changes to prevent arthritis, such as staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and practicing good posture. It’s also important to eat a balanced diet that includes anti-inflammatory foods such as fruits, vegetables, and omega-3s that help keep your joints healthy.
