Amanda Seyfried believes pets give their owners “purpose.”
The 38-year-old actress’ family includes seven-year-old Nina and four-year-old son Thomas with her actor husband Thomas Sadosky, as well as rescue dog Finn.
She told People how she thinks dogs enrich people’s lives: No matter what we say, we cannot deny the fact that we need a purpose. And the fact that you have the responsibility of caring for an animal that has no say and can do little for itself makes you do it. Really more than we can give them.
“I don’t know what my 20s would have been like without Finn. I really don’t know.”
“I don’t know how I made it in Hollywood. I mean, I think I stayed out of a lot of trouble because I had a guy to come home to.”
Amanda adopted the 15-year-old Australian Shepherd while working on the set of the HBO series Big Love.
She told People magazine about getting a dog in 2019:
“He completely changed my life and helped me find solitude and independence.
“I took him home with the intention of finding a home and spending a few weeks with him, and I fell in love with him right away.
“I just thought, ‘I’ll protect him,’ and he ended up protecting me.
“I’ve struggled with a lot of anxiety, I’ve had obsessive-compulsive disorder, and my 20s were generally hard, so like everyone’s 20s are hard, he was unique. I think it grounded me in a way that I never could have.”
Amanda added that she can’t believe her pet is now 15 years old. We are so lucky that he is still alive and thriving.
“Keep knocking on wood.”
