“While attending a nursing home, I acquired a nail qualification and decided to become self-employed.
“My friends seemed to be in the same situation as me and couldn’t afford to do anything for themselves.
“Seeing it bring joy to others has given me joy in making others feel good.”
Once Kara was given permission to live in her home, she enlisted the help of her father, Steve Greenwood, and her husband, Andrew Capes.
Carla said: “My dad was amazing. He assembled it in one day, painted it the next day and Andrew did all the electrical work.
“We launched so quickly that we immediately saw our customer base double.”
The owners said their focus is on people who live with mental health issues and still feel good about themselves.
She said she took a “Behind the Mask” course on the topic of mental health and how important it is for her to be aware of the sensitive issues that may come through the salon doors.
Kara said: “During lockdown, I started looking at what I could offer to help and boost confidence in areas other than nails.
“I became certified in microblading and semi-permanent makeup to help people with hair loss.”
Carla said the best part about owning her own salon is being a hands-on person and making people happy.
she said: “The best part is seeing clients who come in a little dissatisfied grow in confidence.
“But when you know they’re leaving with their heads held a little higher, you hold your heads up a little bit too.”
