A new self-service Korean ramen restaurant has debuted in Cedar Park. K-Ramyun opened Sept. 27 at 1821 South Lakeline Boulevard, Suite 102.
K-Ramyun co-owner Henry Kim and his wife were inspired to open the fast-casual restaurant because they were fans of a similar style of business in South Korea. When my family lived in South Korea, we often frequented Ramenya (also known as Hangang Ramen), a popular handmade ramen shop along the Hangang River. “It was better and more fun than eating ramen at home,” he wrote in Eater. After the family moved to America, they missed restaurants and decided to open their own version to “share this fun experience with people here.”
K-Ramyun operates with cafeteria-style service in a convenience store-like atmosphere. People grab yellow trays and carry them to a shelf lined with nearly 50 types of ready-to-eat ramen. Korean instant noodles come in so many brands and styles, from spicy to mild, from cheesy to seafood, from kimchi to sesame, including Shin Ramyun, Buldak, Jin, Gomtang, Ottogi, and Chapagetti. There are so many flavors and spice levels. (Unfortunately, there are no gluten-free options.)
Then choose your toppings from 25 options, including eggs, corn, and cheese. There are also other menu items other than ramen such as tteokbokki, kimbap, and ice cream. After paying (there are several price tiers with access to classic or premium ramen and topping combinations), customers head to the cooking station and prepare their dried noodle soup in a special bowl attached to a machine that adds water on a timer. K-Ramyun’s goal is to let people feel “the fun and excitement of choosing Ramyun, choosing toppings, and making your own meal,” but also to share Korean culture with Texans, Kim said. he writes. “I hope this becomes a channel to introduce Korean food and culture,” he says. The Kims imported much of their equipment and products from Korea, including trays, containers, and cooking machinery.
The couple has been working on the restaurant for the past three years and plans to open two more locations by 2025.
K-Ramyun’s business hours are Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Indoor eat-in service is also available.
