Gaming laptops tend to implement more desktop-like hardware, often in pursuit of pure satisfaction. But what if you bought your own desktop hardware and built your own gaming laptop? As Socket Science has shown us all, that would be pretty cool.
This project started with high goals. The plan wasn’t to build something loosely and vaguely like a laptop. (Socket Science) wanted to create something that looked and behaved like a commercial-grade laptop, in every sense of the word. It took us a full 14 months to get there, but the end result is impressive.
Under the hood is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and an XFX Radeon RX6600 connected to an ITX motherboard with some low-profile RAM sticks. These components were combined with a thin keyboard, touchpad, and portable gaming monitor. Fitting all this into a thin laptop case, even a custom case, was no mean feat. I had to shrink the ports to size, use weird ribbon cables, and relocate the heatsink and cooler. Not to mention all the work that goes into 3D printing a strong and actually working case.
The whole journey is quite a journey. If you want to go back to the beginning, you can find part 1 here.
We’ve seen some builds along these lines before, but few come close to this level of fit and finish. It is this kind of physical polishing that is often the most difficult to achieve. All we can say is “Bravo!” Oh, and…video after the break.
