IRON MOUNTAIN — Signs on a privately-owned tower on the north side of Iron Mountain appear to be subject to fines under the city’s zoning code, which could result in fines of up to $500 per day if not removed. There is sex.
City Manager Jordan Stanchina said the largest sign allowed in residential areas is 32 square feet, but the tower’s sign appears to be more than 900 square feet.
Stanchina said Thursday that sign size is being considered in relation to the ordinance, and signs found in violation could be subject to fines.
Under the ordinance, the first-day violation fee is $100. 2nd day, $300. Every day after that is $500.
The red and white sign on Kimberly Street, with the word TRUMP written vertically and the word TOWER written horizontally below it, was installed on the former mine tower on Wednesday.
“The property owner realized that a sign of that size is not allowed or permitted, regardless of the message,” Stanchina said.
Property owner Daniel Rittenhouse could not be reached for comment. But in an interview with WLUC-TV6, he cited his First Amendment right to free speech for carrying the sign.
On Thursday, there was a constant flow of traffic at the tower and plenty of parking to take photos. Most praised it. “Isn’t it amazing?” one woman said as she quickly snapped a photo with her cell phone and then returned to her car.
Officials at the former Hamilton Mine building, which adjoins the Mine Tower site, said they didn’t have a problem with people coming in to take pictures, but they had to prevent people from driving in to get a closer look. He said there was.
But another man driving by questioned whether the tower was actually on city land, given its proximity to Kimberly Avenue.
