When we see signs of cooler weather, it’s tempting to accept everything as comfortable, especially inside our homes. Since you’re switching from a sundress to a sweater, why not refresh your living space with seasonal decor? Incorporate chunky knits and fall colors. As the weather starts to get colder, here’s what Southern interior designers are doing to bring warmth into their spaces.

I adopted a tartan check.
Tartan is a timeless fabric for fall decor and a mainstay of the holiday season. A more common color scheme can be displayed from September to March. Think rich greens, navy, creams, browns, and warm tones.
“Nothing symbolizes fall weather like tartan,” says Marcelle Guilbeau, founder and design director of Marcelle Guilbeau Interiors. “You can warm up the season with terra cotta, ochre, and brown, but you can also warm up a more neutral palette with neutral textures like cream and beige.”

Please replace the rug.
When it comes to keeping your home warm, think about more than just your couch and bed, it also includes what’s under your feet. “The most effective way to give a room a completely new look is to replace one rug with another (appropriately sized) rug,” explains interior designer Kaylee Stefanek of Logos Interiors.
She adds that you might be surprised to find that your space feels larger and more design-savvy. “You’ll be itching to invite friends and family over for the holidays,” she says of the results.
Consider replacing it with a new area rug in a rich, inviting color palette. Can you see how Lulu and Georgia’s patterned rug ($538 – $3,998) instantly compliments the simple furniture in this living area? (The bedroom image at the top of the article looks just as great ) Image: Lulu and Georgia
Caylee also explains that color is important when creating atmosphere with a rug. “Many of us have been in a world of all-white interiors with gray accents for a while now. A great way to add warmth and coziness to your home is to add warmth and richness to your rug. Change the rug to a different color.”

Add texture.
If you want to make your space even more inviting for the fall/winter season, use all the softest and most cozy textiles. The great thing about this easy hack is that you can use it in almost every room in your home.
Ashley Meier, principal interior designer at Ashley Meier Interiors, explains: It’s nice to be able to curl up as the days get shorter. ”
Ashley’s favorite blanket is Donna Salyers’ Fabulous Faux Fur. “Their faux fur is a step above other fur pillows and blankets,” she says. “My favorites are the ivory mink cushions and cushions from the Couture collection. The chocolate mink version is also great.”

The cozy textile can also be used outdoors.
There’s no need to keep cozy pillows, textured throw blankets, and warm layers indoors. If you spend a lot of time on your patio or like to enjoy the outdoors, take your textiles outside. Give your space a stylish and attractive look. “This is the perfect time of year to incorporate warm clothing that will make your home cozy,” says Marcel.

Set the table with an organic touch.
Just like you put out a summery bouquet in June, think of fall and winter as an opportunity to put the best of your harvest on the table. Fresh ingredients like pumpkin, rosemary, gourd, and pomegranate add rich color and texture. You can also use live plants!
“On cooler days, we often set the table accordingly,” says Shea Briers, owner of Shea Briers Design. “You don’t have to plan a dinner party to bring out all the luxuries. Adding seasonal colors and natural elements like pumpkin and red berries will create an organic feel on your tabletop.”

Replace with a new lampshade.
Of course, it’s appropriate to change out accent pillows seasonally. But the lampshade is also noteworthy.
“This is a fun and easy way to change up your space seasonally,” says Shea. “The warm fabrics and deep colors of a fabric lampshade can actually warm a room, not just through the addition of textiles, but also through the way different bulbs create different glows.”
She recommends choosing one set of lampshades for each room and switching to warmer, cozier fabrics that will last through fall and winter.
It’s easy to change out a few blankets and pillows for each season, but lampshades can also make a big impact. For a cozy effect, consider warm colors and fabrics. These unique velvet dome lamp shades are available at Anthropologie for $128 each. Image: Anthropology
Update your outdoor planters.
“In the Southeast, we have the advantage of having live plants that bloom and thrive year-round, so give that a try in a planter in front of your house,” says Shea. She takes cues from fall plants like zinnias and sweet potato evergreens, and looks to the changing foliage around her to inspire the planter’s hues.
Consider replacing your outdoor planters with a cozy hue, like this copper-colored barrel planter from PinTerrain ($88 – $218). Image: Terrain
Don’t forget plants for cold regions! “In winter, cyclamen and pansies bloom and become quite an evergreen,” she added. “Always be aware of the specific needs of these plants and where the pot will be placed in relation to the sun.”
Change the artwork on Frame TV.
If you have a Frame TV, what’s it currently showing? If you haven’t updated it in a few months, now’s the perfect time, especially if it’s one of the largest works of art in your home .
“If you have a Frame TV, consider changing the artwork to a fall/winter color palette, like this Hannah Winters landscape,” says Ciara Word, lead designer at Word Interiors. I say. “It’s such an easy way to make a big impact in your space!”

Light your favorite autumn-inspired candle.
There’s no better way to instantly add a fall vibe to your home than by lighting candles. “Lighting your favorite candle can be uplifting for people who are struggling with reduced daylight hours. It can help you embrace the season rather than resist it,” says Ashley. Her favorite fall scent is “Moroccan Amber” by Nest Candles.
Shea added, “The smell of wood, whiskey, leather, and smoke… makes me want to dim the lights, snuggle up, and watch a Hallmark movie!”
If scented candles aren’t your thing, we recommend using battery-powered candles throughout your home and even in your fireplace, such as Amazon’s LED Pillar Candles.
