In fact, it turns out that just scrolling online can help you become more active. At the very least, more women are getting inspired by social media to start strength training.
“It’s becoming more and more popular,” says Madison Gross, fitness trainer at GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness. “When you post your workouts, which you often see on Instagram and TikTok, people come to the gym who actually want to do it, which is great. Lately, more and more women are interested in weight training. ”
Clare Vanoverschelde, in her third year as a GreatLIFE trainer, has also seen that increase.
“Most of my clients are women, and I think social media is a big factor in attracting them initially,” she said.
“But with so much information out there, it’s hard to differentiate between what you should and shouldn’t do. That’s when taking a group class or working with a personal trainer can be helpful. We can sit down and talk about everything you saw and what we would recommend.
VanOverschelde primarily trains at the Performance Center. Mr. Gross usually belongs to the Woodlake Athletic Club. Other GreatLIFE locations, including our 39th Street and Phillips Avenue locations and our newly expanded Harrisburg location, also offer a wealth of options for strength training.
“Women are starting to notice a difference in how they feel after lifting weights, both throughout the day and throughout the week,” Gross says. “Maybe you see an increase in energy after giving birth, or if you have a demanding full-time job or are going to school.”
However, there are some misconceptions when it comes to weight training.
VanOverschelde says many people mistakenly believe that the only path to weight loss is to do lots of aerobic exercise.
“That’s good, but when you combine cardio with strength training, you really notice a difference,” she said. “We want to focus on things like how the clothes fit. That’s where you start to see the difference.”
Another big stereotype is that weightlifting makes women look “too fat.”
“That’s the biggest problem,” VanOverschelde said. “I’m just reassuring people you’re not going to do that. You’ll lose weight, you’ll gain muscle mass, but you won’t look bigger.”
In fact, the first thing you’ll notice is an increase in energy, Gross says.
“You’ll notice right away,” she said. “And many people immediately notice a difference in how their clothes fit.”
But they agreed it would take three to six months to see any real change.
“It takes this long to see significant results,” VanOverschelde said. “Very early on, some clients say they no longer need naps during the day or feel tired during a round of golf, but longer is better to see a bigger difference.”
And don’t forget to focus on nutrition and dress in layers, they said.
“If weight loss is your main goal, weight training can help, but the difference is in your nutritional decisions,” VanOverschelde says. “Starting with strength training is great, but I also want to add nutrition because that’s an important part of the journey.”
They work with people from their teens to their 80s, and they start by showing you how strength training equipment works and making sure you have enough mobility and flexibility to do the lifts. Masu.
“Some of the videos you see online are not instantaneous,” VanOverschelde added. “It takes time to get better, but we can work on it, and as you get more comfortable, we can increase the complexity of the movements you do.” We see some cool moves, but we need a knowledge base before we can try something more complex.”
GreatLIFE’s free initial evaluation of GreatSTART is an ideal way to get started, Gross says.
“It’s a great way to have an initial conversation and discuss what you’re interested in. You can also have them show you how the machines and equipment work,” she says. I did. “You can also use that time to do some free training, so you can experience what it’s like to work with a trainer, and from there there’s constant progress and goals you want to aim for. You can set it.
