NORTHPORT, N.Y. — Marcus and Sasha, 8-month-old close-knit siblings, have been named the Northport Cat Rescue Society’s “Kitten of the Week.”
According to conservation volunteer Laura Wild, a mother cat named Maya and her daughter Cleo both gave birth to kittens a few days apart, and they rescued a total of 12 kittens.
Wilde said Maya continued to nurse the kittens until they were about three weeks old, then decided she wanted to stop. Wilde said her daughter Cleo took over and literally nursed everyone by herself.
“Even though Cleo was just a kitten, she was an amazing mother,” Wilde said. “She was adopted, lives in the best home ever, and is living the best life. Every single one of Maya (who also lives in a loving home) and Cleo’s kittens have been adopted. I did.”
Everyone except Sasha and Marcus.
“It was funny because she was paying attention to the other kittens, because they were all very sociable and it seemed like she kept getting passed by them,” Wilde said. “I didn’t know that Sasha and Marcus had been here as long as they had never applied or had any interest. I think it’s because they have such great personalities, and I’m saddened that they They don’t look like they are. The kittens are loving, gentle, and relaxed and I really wish they had found a home for their siblings first.”
Wilde said these were two of 12 kittens that were in everyone’s care. And now that the rest of the kittens have found homes, it’s time for Marcus and Sasha to find their own.
“Marcus is the most outgoing, funniest, stupidest kitten ever,” Wilde said. “Sasha is more of an observer. She loves cuddles. In fact, the other evening she took a 10-minute nap with one of our volunteers. They don’t do that often. No, but she came on her lap and the volunteer, as we affectionately call it, suddenly developed cat palsy as she snuggled and relaxed. The only thing they could see was their home, where they all felt safe. Their mother was safe, too.”
Marcus and Sasha grew up with children, other cats, and even a dog.
“They’re top of the line,” Wilde said. “If you’re looking for two great kittens, these are your babies cuddling together at Petco Commack, come see them. They’re hard to grow in our habitat. They’re losing a lot, and it’s time for them to leave home. “
