HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – Nonprofits and organizations across central Alabama are accepting supplies and donations for Hurricane Helen victims.
Among the many veterinary clinics out there, the one in Hoover makes sure pets aren’t forgotten.
“It’s absolutely heartbreaking,” said Dr. Tricia Bradac, chief veterinarian at Oakview Animal Hospital. “As a company, we know some of the people who have been personally affected, so we are really, really heartbroken and want to help in any way we can, no matter how small. It’s obvious what you’re thinking.”
A few days ago, the lobby of Oakview Animal Hospital was nearly overflowing with pet food, beds and blankets. They collected dozens of items in just 12 hours and delivered them to Western North Carolina on Sunday.
“Last week, one of our customers contacted us and said he was returning to his hometown in rural North Carolina and wanted to post something on our Facebook page to accept donations and deliver them to his local community. “They asked me to do it,” Dr. Bradac explained. “We had such a great response from our clients in the community that we decided to keep it going.”
Although the collection is not yet complete, you can support this effort by dropping off items such as pet food, water bottles, and bedding.
“In our profession, we are looking at this from a different perspective,” she added. “We’re looking at it not only from the human perspective, but also from their animal perspective.”
Donations will go to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and Blue Ridge Animal Shelter in Asheville.
They’re doing more than just sending aid out of state. We also provide in-house services.
“No matter how big the storm is, we have always evacuated families and provided boarding and pet care. We have also provided shelter and assistance to displaced animals in need. They are healthy and have returned home,” Dr. Bradac said.
Oakview Animal Hospital is accepting donations until October 19th. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with limited hours on weekends.
