HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – More than a week after widespread damage in Tennessee and North Carolina, one Letcher organization is giving back to help pets affected by flooding. I’m trying to do that.
Tara Ritchie, founder of Appalachian Pet Pantry, said she wants to help people going through experiences like what she saw in July 2022.
“We immediately thought back to two years ago, experiencing the 2022 floods here and realizing that these people are in dire straits and will need help from all over the country. “I knew that,” she explained.
Ritchie said he immediately began collecting donations to deliver to Tennessee and North Carolina.
“In just about eight days, we collected about $5,000 worth of pet supplies. We rented a U-Haul, filled it up, jumped in and headed to Tennessee,” she said. “From there, we partnered with another organization that was headed to the hardest-hit areas of Asheville, North Carolina, and provided them with supplies to take to areas that were still difficult to access. It was done.”
She said they continue to collect items as much as possible.
“All of the donations we receive come from our community and we are just one of the organizations in Letcher County contributing to this effort,” Ritchie said.
Ritchie said you can drop off items directly. It is located at 78 Golf Course Ln. Off US-119.
She said donations can also be made online through the website.
