Northern Illinois Vice President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier and DePauw (DIII) Theodore Caturra Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports Stevie Baker Watson present ADU’s Steph and Recreational Sports at the 2024 NACDA Convention. We spoke with García Cichos and delved into her experiences raising children. Career in athletics. Baker Watson recalls the birth of her first child early in her career. At the time, she was the head athletic trainer and her husband was the head football coach, and they realized their due date was right in the middle of football season. From that experience, Ms. Baker-Watson recognized the perspective gap between working mothers and administrators who are not parents or the primary parent in the family structure, and advocated for herself in her promotion to the big chair. I realized the importance of doing so.
Frazier, who juggled a grueling schedule as a coach while embarking on his journey into parenthood, said of the “talks” he had with his wife early in his career: , because it has to be give and take. Marriage is one thing, but the actual giving and receiving of business is extreme. ” Mr. Frazier also talks about his wife’s concept of a “family business” and how he balances the demands of the Big Chair with family priorities and commitments.
Frazier and Baker-Watson also discuss how becoming parents can make them stronger, more effective leaders in their departments, and why athletics and higher education are important in the post-House election landscape. We are also considering whether we should continue to be connected.
