In the aftermath of Hurricane Helen, there are many stories of rescue efforts underway to help thousands of people without food or water and potentially in need of medical assistance. But humans aren’t the only victims of this deadly storm. Countless animals that survived Helen are struggling to survive as well.
Rescue teams in several states are working to rescue pets that survived the hurricane. Rescuers collected the lost pets and took them to a shelter.
Part of the problem is that some shelters are so damaged that they can’t house any animals at all. Other shelters are still operating but empty, making it difficult to find shelter space for the large number of pets stranded by the storm. Shelter staff may have to make very difficult decisions about whether to euthanize shelter pets to make room for rescued animals after the storm. All this while dealing with the problem of not even having electricity or clean water.
What can you do? If there is an organization in your area working to help pet survivors of hurricanes, please offer your support in the form of a monetary donation or pet food or bottled water. Let’s consider collaborating. Your pet will appreciate some practical help, such as walking the animal, feeding it, helping transport it, or even taking it to the vet for necessary treatment.
If you live in an area not affected by the storm, consider donating to one of the local, state, or national organizations working to rescue storm pets. It is hoped that many lost pets will eventually find their homes. This is another good reminder to microchip your pet. Many pets lost their collars and ID tags during the storm, but their microchips are never lost. And once power is restored, shelters and local veterinarians may be able to scan pets lost in the storm and help find their way home. This is the best result when it comes to pets.
