Furniture fringe wasn’t on my 2024 bingo card, but it’s definitely been adopted by fashion designers and interior designers alike this year. We’ve seen it taking over the runways at New York Fashion Week and draped throughout interiors around the world, including seating, lighting, and upholstery.
“I’ve always maintained that ‘texture’ is color, and it’s an interesting way to go for those who appreciate sophisticated palettes that add depth and complexity to a space,” says Emma Breislin, interiors editor at Livingetc. I say. I felt a real sense of “surprise and joy” at the amount of movement and it. ”
With a move to bring more eclectic style and rich personality back into our homes, fringe furniture has quickly become one of this year’s biggest interior design trends. People are making a chic shift from minimalism to something that feels a little more playful and experimental, giving fringe a window to waltz back into the interior scene. Want to know how? Where did the fringe furniture trend come from?

Of course, fringe furniture is by no means a new topic. Although it can be traced back to the Victorian era when fringes were a staple on lampshades and upholstery trims, I think the period when fringes were most prominent was during the Art Deco design era of the 1920s. Fringe was a hallmark of this glamorous decade, flapper dresses were all the rage, and interiors were defined by bold furniture, prints, and patterns.
Then we saw fringe come back into the home in a big way with the iconic boho living rooms of the 1960s and 1970s. We’ve been dabbling in trends ever since (we’re thinking specifically of the recent bohemian craze and 2010’s Coachella craze).
So why now? According to interior designer Nina Lichtenstein, founder of Nina Lichtenstein Custom Home Design, “Fringes are being reimagined in today’s homes, adding movement, fun, and tactile appeal to spaces. The return is nostalgic. It also feels fresh, and designers are leaning into its fringe’s ability to bring both elegance and whimsy to a room. ”

So what does modern fringe furniture look like? Bohemian style details give a more nuanced and sophisticated look. The idea that the 1970s are back but better is now permeating everything from paint colors to prints and patterns to furniture design.
“In a world of design that favors minimalism these days, fringe offers a break from strict, clean lines and an opportunity to experiment with playful, tactile embellishments,” says Nina. She continues, “This change may also be related to the rise of unique, characterful interiors, where texture, color and unusual materials offer ways to inject personality into the home.” I’m explaining.
Textural design is another big interior trend that’s being incorporated throughout the home. The fringe creates a moving texture. The long tassels are eye-catching and will make you dream of a stylish setting while playing your favorite records. Nina says that today’s fringe “creates a tactile appeal, and this tactility makes spaces more livable and approachable, while still being chic.”
The best part about this delicate yet bold detail is that it can be incorporated into a variety of spaces and individual pieces. It also doesn’t mean you need to invest in every new product. Now that we’ve established the modern trajectory of fringe furniture, let’s think about how to implement this trend into your home. Thankfully, there are a variety of furniture and home goods brands that offer plenty of options. H&M Home’s recent Coqui Coqui collaboration was dripping with fringe.
“Anthropologie’s Sinclair Fringe Sofa has been on my wish list for a long time,” adds Living etc interiors editor Emma Breislin. “It’s the perfect balance of pared-down, cute and playful.”
And balance is the key to embracing trends. That being said, fringe furniture is most effective when used as a luxurious accent piece or to make a statement within a space. “Adding fringes to upholstered furniture like ottomans, accent chairs, and sofas creates a bohemian-meets-luxe vibe,” says Nina, adding that velvet fringed ottomans “give a luxurious, sophisticated look. It blends beautifully with the metallic accents.”
Accent chairs and the edges of upholstery are the most popular places to incorporate fringe. A subtle and stylish way to show your love for maximalism in interior design. However, if you want to try something a little more daring, a fringe at the end of a table lamp or chandelier will catch the eye.
But again, balance is key. “Pairing fringe with minimalist pieces keeps it modern and understated. A sleek mid-century chair with a fringe trim at the base or a modern chair adorned with fringed details. “This combination keeps the space from feeling vintage or overly themed and allows the fringe to shine as a surprising and fun design element,” says Nina. There are endless ways to try this funky trend. Here are some things you can buy.
