Whether you’re looking to redecorate a room or introduce a design aesthetic for the new year, it’s important to think about what style you want to express.
Alysha Alli, head of interior design at Redrow, says she’s seen hundreds of trends come and go.
“Following trends can have a strong impact, but be careful when making big changes in your home,” says Ali.
“Rather than going all-in, opt for small, accessory-based changes rather than a full-scale renovation project, and always remember to have a positive vision for what’s coming next,” Ali says. he advises.
Throughout the year, designers say they’ve seen many interesting projects and new themes that are poised to take 2025 by storm.
Here’s what should be on your radar…
Focus on sustainability
“Sustainability will continue to be at the forefront of interior design,” says Ali. “Rather than buying mass-produced home decor items, people are choosing to shop local, support small businesses by sourcing items from Etsy, and share what they have with marketplaces and charities. I make a conscious choice to upcycle things I find in shops.”
The “life cycle” of a product is also important. Tracking where something comes from, particularly choosing British-made goods, will be a real growth trend into 2025, Ali points out.
“Think artisanal fabrics, ceramics, and other artifacts that add authenticity and vibrancy to interiors.
“These craftsmanship skills and values add incredible souvenir value to the interior as well as the environment.”
A space that adapts to modern lifestyles
Ali said the concept of flexible living is gaining traction as homeowners seek spaces that can adapt to changing needs.
“Function-first adaptive design with a focus on long-term investment is key: modular furniture that can be reconfigured for different uses, rooms that can be used for multiple purposes, and available space Think about making the most of it.”
This trend is aimed at creating versatile spaces that can evolve with the homeowner’s lifestyle, and Ali emphasizes that every square foot counts. “The key is to make the space work for you, rather than working for it.”
For example, you might decide to set up a workstation within your bedroom setup, using a sofa bed, vanity, and desk, Ali suggests.
Alternatively, you can invest in a coffee table or console with a hidden compartment that folds up to become a desk. You can also fold it up and store it at the end of the day.
Understated luxury
“In 2025, understated luxury will redefine our elegance,” says Ali. Think natural materials and soft minimalism. She says the trend emphasizes timeless pieces that exude understated sophistication.
“Because screaming about luxury is no longer considered trendy.”
Wood, stone and linen should take center stage, Ali advises, and complement them with a neutral color palette that creates a calming atmosphere.
“We focus on quality over quantity, with carefully selected items that add a touch of luxury without overwhelming space.
“As trends show, less is almost certainly more in this instance.”
bold and bright
If dopamine-inducing décor, loud colors and patterns are your vibe, Ari explains that the bold, bright trend is all about unapologetically colored colors and shapes.
“This trend recontextualizes contemporary silhouettes with vibrant hues and bold patterns,” Ali emphasizes. “It celebrates individuality and creativity and encourages homeowners to experiment with bold color combinations and eye-catching designs.
“Layering bold purples, oranges and greens with paint and complementing them with heavy fabrics on window treatments and sofas will be popular next year.”
She continues: “Dulux Color of the Year 2025 True Joy (uplifting yellow) is another example of the trend of bold, bright color choices. Yellow tones, along with a pop of color, add optimism to your home. It brings a feeling.”
It’s a great way to add color to a child’s room, regardless of gender, and is also suitable for older children and teenagers’ bedrooms, Ali says.
“Pops of fabric in this distinctive yellow tone, such as accent cushions, offer a subtle way to style your home with this trend.”
