COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — State Treasurer Curtis Loftis wants his kids to take financial classes, and he’s starting a personal lesson plan to do just that. The goal, Loftis said, is to teach children at an early age the importance of fiscal responsibility through interactive lessons. The lessons are taught from a kit based on a coloring book titled “Lucky Ducky and the Smart Plan.”
Teachers with access to this kit can teach students in kindergarten through 12th grade goal-setting play, financial education, skill development, how to have meaningful conversations about money, and the difference between wants and needs. All classroom tutorials make understanding all concepts easy and fun.
Curtis Loftis further elaborates on the plan:
“It’s never too early to learn the importance of saving money and making smart financial choices,” Finance Minister Loftis said of the new lesson plan. “That’s why we developed this interactive lesson plan specifically for elementary school teachers. We encourage important financial skills from an early age, giving students a foundational knowledge that can expand as they progress through school. We would like to provide this.”
The plan is in partnership with SC Economics and the Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan, and is one of many initiatives the department has undertaken to increase personal financial education in the Palmetto State, according to the state Department of Finance. It is said that it is not too much.
Supply will be on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 100 K-12 teachers.
