WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Home security footage shows the moment a man was caught taking down a political sign on the front porch of a Wichita home. The owner of the house did not allow the man to leave.
The homeowner, Dennett, who asked that 12News use only her name and not publish her face, said she worked at an early voting site in past elections and that the confrontation occurred there. He said he had seen it. She said she didn’t expect it to land on her front lawn.
On Monday afternoon, Dennett received an unexpected visitor who parked in front of a sign that read, “This property is protected by video surveillance.” A man was caught on camera walking up to Dennett’s front door and ripping off a Kamala Harris campaign sign.
“Because of the look on his face when I opened the wooden door, he didn’t realize I was (in the house).”
It was then that Dennett confronted the man.
“I told him, ‘You’re on camera, I’m going to call 911,’ but it didn’t stop,” she said.
Moments later, the man was seen returning to his car, before pulling up and throwing another campaign sign in Dennett’s yard.
“This is my personal space. When you come and want to remove things from my porch, that’s unnecessary,” she said.
Dennett filed a police report and said the campaign sign had been restored as of Tuesday morning. She wants her private property to be respected this time.
“I’m 67 years old. Please be a little more respectful,” Dennett said.
12 News requested a copy of the police report, but Wichita is not the only place where incidents like this occur. Garden City police said they have received multiple reports of campaign signs being damaged or stolen over the past few weeks. Police warn that this is illegal and a crime, as is damaging or stealing someone else’s property.
