The Susquehanna SPCA remains committed to assisting those across the South who are still facing hardship in the aftermath of Hurricane Helen. This week, they received a call from the BISSELL Pet Foundation asking if the SQSPCA could help again following the recent transfer of pets from Tennessee. Executive Director Stacey Haynes said: Luckily, the evacuation space became available just as BISSELL called. ”
On Friday evening, the SQSPCA team arrived at the Binghamton Air Service FBO to greet nine dogs and three cats that had been airlifted from a hurricane-impacted shelter in western North Carolina. This lifesaving mission was organized by the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Animal Incident Management (AIM) team, who coordinated and provided funding for the pet flights. This transport is made possible with support from Pilots to the Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to flying pets to safety and helping them find new loving homes. It has become.
The rescued pets had either been adopted at shelters before the hurricane or had recently been surrendered by owners affected by the storm. Relocating these animals allowed North Carolina shelters to house additional animals in need of emergency care, freeing up local staff time to focus on recovery efforts.
“We are heartbroken by the devastation caused by Hurricane Helen and are grateful to be able to assist overwhelmed shelters and pets in need,” Haynes said. “A huge thank you to BISSELL Pet Foundation and Pilots to the Rescue for making this rescue possible.”
The new arrivals, ranging from Shih Tzus to Anatolian Shepherds, will be up for adoption starting Saturday, October 26th. Each has a unique personality and is ready for a loving home.
“We invite you to come and meet our adoptable pets on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Haynes said. “All dog adoption fees will be waived until Saturday, and cat adoptions will be 2-1 until the end of October.”
