Born to Build – Today’s construction process often involves more steps and intermediate forms than historically seen, reducing to the final result. For example, in the process of assembling formwork for a concrete project, dense scaffolding is erected and then supports the negative formwork of a building at a stage when it appears far from its final shape. In such a process, the forms resulting from the construction process continue to emerge and disappear in newly emerging forms, so the construction process without attempts at formal or intellectual levels becomes a continuous generator with the emergence of content. It becomes. Thus, the most dramatic formal changes occur in this location.

This situation is currently ignored by architects in two aspects: 1) The failure to incorporate this constantly changing state into metaphysical thinking as a means of generating formal language. 2) the loss of the ability to understand the materiality of materials, to investigate their own physical tendencies, and to adjust and guide the production of shapes; In the classical period, these abilities were possible due to the immediacy of the building process. and the unity of the architect and designer in coordinating and directing the capacity for shape generation during the construction procedure.

Since 2019, SpActrum Architects has been designing and actively involved in all aspects of the construction process. SpActrum’s architects have traveled from site to site and experienced the process of building from scratch under modern construction systems. Witnessing the double neglect mentioned above, and perhaps thanks to always keeping fresh eyes, they were surprised at the industry-wide insensitivity and indifference to such neglect. Construction site shapes appear and disappear. This means that many components are discarded or recycled at the end of the construction step, or hidden deep within the finished product, never to be known about again.

These essential construction components are hidden from public view. When the SpActrum office moved to a new location, they decided to break this silence and confront this oversight in their own office and exhibition space, incorporating these hidden behind-the-scenes forces as surface materials in the office/exhibition space. I used it. By re-establishing connections with new functional needs through physical properties, new ways of use can be reached, while still making its form easily recognizable. In this way, these building materials enter the everyday consciousness of us, the builders, and the public consciousness of our visitors.

A non-exhaustive list of materials reused in the construction process is detailed below.
Mold: The primary modeling tool for pouring concrete. Usually made of metal or plastic, they have been repurposed as furniture supports.
Refractory bricks: architectural ceramics that need to be hardened and fired in a hearth protected by refractory bricks, reborn as furniture supports.

GMT pallets: Serving as fireproof pallets in the sintering of machine-made bricks, these fireproof fiber slabs take on a marble-like appearance when coated with resin and are used as worktops for workbenches.
Floor Load-bearing Plates: Doing double duty as formwork and reinforcement in the concrete process, these plates are mass-produced in factories by welding, have considerable structural capacity, and are a common support for bench worktops and display tables. used as.
