In an effort to promote fitness and camaraderie between sailors and officers, HMAS Stirling is gearing up to host its inaugural Fit Games this October.
The event, dubbed “Stirling’s Fittest,” promised a thrilling competition that showcased the physical ability and determination of naval personnel.
Spearheaded by Physical Training Instructor Chief Petty Officer Tamara Prince, innovative fitness sessions like the Daily WOD (Workout of the Day) have been introduced to suit participants of all fitness levels and schedules. A dynamic workout was provided.
“Daily WOD was designed to inject energy into our daily lives and make fitness accessible to everyone, regardless of commitment,” said Chief Petty Officer Prince.
The success of these sessions paved the way for the introduction of Olympic Lifting classes catering to individuals interested in weightlifting training.
But the crowning moment came with the official recognition of CrossFit as a Level 4 approved sport in the defense sector by the ADF Sports Council, which spurred the idea for the Fit Games.
Chief Petty Officer Prince, who is an avid supporter of weightlifting, said she has found the discipline to have had a transformative impact on her personal fitness journey.
Chief Petty Officer Prins, who overcame his own injuries through dedicated training and rehabilitation, advocates weightlifting as a means to improve mobility and reduce pain, regardless of athletic experience.
The integration of CrossFit into Navy fitness programs owes much to the advocacy of Physical Education Instructor Petty Officer Matthew Rowe, who was a driving force behind the sport’s visibility within the Defense community.
Petty Officer Lowe’s efforts culminated in the founding of the ADF Association, which promotes naval personnel participation in the fitness phenomenon.
More than just a competition, the Fit Games embody the Navy’s commitment to total health and physical preparedness.
