Shrewsbury – Andrea Castignetti was collecting supplies for the Shrewsbury Community Fridge when she read a message on Facebook from a person in need who said they couldn’t afford to feed their pets.
She was already heavily involved in the community between her countless volunteer efforts and her Shrewsbury-based business, Castignetti Realty Group. But this struggle could not be heard without action.
Castignetti argued that people who are suffering should not have to decide between feeding their families and feeding their pets, and through coordination, the Pet Pantry of Central Massachusetts was created.
“I never thought about the fact that if I couldn’t afford to put food on the table for my kids, my pets would be the last thing I wanted. One day I decided I needed to start a version of a community fridge. , this time for pets,” she told Community Advocate.
The pantry, which opened in July and is located at 745 Main St. in Shrewsbury, features Castignetti’s dogs, Tucker and Brody, as mascots. The pantry is open to the public on Sundays and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with additional hours on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Includes pet food, supplies, toys, and more. Originally a small warehouse, the pantry has expanded significantly since its opening.
“Honestly, it far exceeded my expectations. If you look at the cost of pet food, everyone has pets since COVID-19. We make sure we provide essential supplies. We also contribute to shelters and rescue efforts, basically anyone in need around Central Massachusetts,” Castinetti said. .
Castignetti said the pantry would not be able to stay open without the support of volunteers and the community. Generous residents and local businesses are stocking up on supplies, with small businesses becoming Pantry Sponsors of the Month. In the months since opening, the pantry has helped hundreds of pets and their owners.
“I love it all, to see the relief on people’s faces when they can come and feed their dogs and cats. The people who volunteer every shift are a part of that. “I’m excited to be able to help people who really need it,” Castignetti added.
