Warning: This article contains spoilers for Beauty in Black Season 1.
From a blackmail plot against Kimmy to a budding romance that Mallory denies, the ending of Beauty in Black season 1 is full of bombshells. Beauty in Black is Tyler Perry’s latest project that has been years in the making. Consider doing business with Netflix. The cast of Beauty in Black is led by Crystal Stewart and Taylor Polidor Williams, who play two very different women whose very different lives collide in unexpected ways. Season 1 will be available on Netflix on October 24th and consists of eight hour-long episodes (eight more episodes are planned for spring 2025).
The series revolves around Kimmy, who is struggling to make ends meet after being kicked out by her mother, and Mallory, who runs a successful hair care business. Kimmy desperately wants to escape the shady underworld of the strip club where she works, while Mallory’s empire is threatened by family secrets and a troublesome lawyer. These concurrent storylines lead to a series of shocking developments in the finale, Season 1, Episode 8, “Killing Karma.”
Why Horace Really Lets Go of Kimmy and Angel
Hearing about the corrupt judge made him realize he had bigger problems.
Beauty in Black’s Season 1 finale gets off to a shocking start as a group of masked gunmen take Kimmy and Angel hostage and attempt to rob Horace’s safe. Horace pulls out a gun and kills all of the robbers before they leave. Although he initially suspected Kimmy to be behind the robbery, Angel accepted. When Horace presses them for the truth, they reveal that they were both planning to rob him in order to get enough money to get out of the club and start a new life.
Beauty in Black reunites Tyler Perry and several former collaborators, including Krystle Stewart and Debbie Morgan.
When Kimmy explains that Jules is a pimp who used a corrupt judge on his payroll to get the criminal charges dropped, Horace decides to release them. Horace tells them to go away and not tell anyone they saw him. When they talked about the judge, he realized he had bigger problems to worry about. He then talks about Judge Harold Wiscollins, who he and his brother knew, and asks Jules if Harold is still in the courtroom and still talks to him. Jules says that’s not the case, but Horace doesn’t believe him.
Mallory’s feelings for Calvin and hesitation about their romance explained
It all ties back to the show’s central theme of classism.
Throughout Season 1 of Beauty in Black, Mallory sleeps with her driver, Calvin. However, when he confesses that he is in love with her, she is reluctant to face her romantic feelings for him and throws him out of the house. Malorie’s reluctance to commit to a serious relationship with Calvin plays into the series’ overarching theme of classism. She is an elitist and does not want to take her relationship with Calvin, her driver, seriously. When the show returns in spring 2025, Mallory may finally come to terms with her feelings for Calvin and enter into a serious relationship with him.
Who tried to rob Horace?
Jules decides it was a safe company (but could have covered herself)
After Horace kills a would-be robber, Jules arrives to clean up the scene like Winston Wolfe in Pulp Fiction. Jules notices that one of the thieves has a safe company’s business card in his wallet. It was the same company that installed the safe in the first place. Jules determines that the men who delivered the safe have returned to steal it. However, Jules never shows Horace her business card, so she may have shown him the card to hide her role in the planned robbery.
Why Mallory and Roy offer Lena a job
they were trying to buy her
Lena is a lawyer, and her discoveries about Mallory’s hair care empire cause problems for the Bellary family and could cause the company to collapse. In the season 1 finale, Roy meets Lena at a restaurant and offers her a job in the legal department. So Mallory confronts them, pulls up a chair, uses her connections to get Roy out of the building, and makes the same offer to Lena. When Lena tells her that Roy has offered her the same position, Mallory is genuinely impressed that her usually obtuse brother-in-law has come up with the same diabolical plan as her.
The 19-year-old comedy that completely changed Tyler Perry’s movie career is now on Netflix
Diary of a Mad Black Woman is currently available on Netflix and marks the beginning of the popular Tyler Perry-led series that launched the actor’s career.
They are both trying to buy her out, hoping that if they give her a job at the company, she will stop trying to destroy it. However, Lena insists that she can’t get anyone to buy her and that “it’s not a question of money.” Mallory laughs it off and thinks it’s impossible. This is one of the core themes of the show. Rich people think that all their problems can be solved with money, but this is not the case when dealing with others honestly.
Who destroyed Roy’s car?
Looked like the same guys who tried to rob Horace (so they’re probably connected to Jules)
The penultimate episode of Beauty in Black season 1 ended with Roy’s yellow sports car being destroyed. Toward the end of the finale, as police investigate a possible attack, Mallory is shocked to discover Roy’s car on fire in the driveway. In the final episode, Roy’s car is shot to the side of the road by a group of masked gunmen and blown up. These masked assailants appear to be the same group that attempted to rob Horace, and they appear to have been hired by Jules, so they may all be connected to Jules.
Why did Bodie kidnap Sylvia?
Bodie wanted to blackmail Kimmy (but the plan backfired)
In the shocking final scene of Beauty in Black Season 1, Kimmy and Angel confront Bodhi. Bodhi, who has greatly misunderstood recent events, believes Kimmy is trying to usurp his position at the club. Bodhi reveals that he has kidnapped Kimmy’s teenage sister Sylvia and intends to use it to blackmail Kimmy into getting out of his way and doing whatever he wants. However, the plan backfires when Kimmy attacks Bodie and starts hitting her.
This ends the season on a surprising cliffhanger and raises a lot of questions. Is the body dead? Will Jules come after Kimmy? Will Sylvia be okay?
When Bodie pulls a knife on Jules and threatens to kill her, Kimmy gets in her car and rams Jules. This ends the season on a surprising cliffhanger and raises a lot of questions. Is the body dead? Will Jules come after Kimmy? Will Sylvia be okay? One thing is clear: Kimmy will not go along with this blackmail plan. She will do whatever it takes to get her sister back – and run over anyone she needs to with her car.
The true meaning of Beauty in Black season 1’s ending
Contrasting the despair of economically disadvantaged people with the despair of wealthy people
The ending of Beauty in Black season 1 is the culmination of the show’s Saltburn-esque themes about class. It’s all about rich people trying to exercise power over poor people. Both Mallory and Roy think Lena is a “bankrupt mother” so they can buy her off, but Lena has an unexpected honesty. The finale contrasts the desperation of those who suffer financially with the desperation of those who are wealthy. Financially struggling characters like Kimmy and Angel struggle to scrape together enough money to survive, while wealthy characters like Mallory struggle to maintain their wealth.
Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black follows Kimmy and Mallory, a successful businesswoman who struggles with being kicked out. The lives of these two women, played by Taylor Polidore Williams and Krystle Stewart, intersect despite their very different circumstances.
