DOVER, Craven County — Two people are homeless tonight in Craven County after a house fire in the Town of Dover last night. Local authorities said a house fire claimed the lives of several pets and was still under investigation.
Animal protection officials said one cat and three dogs were rescued, but several other animals did not survive.
There is a dog in the house. Understood. The house is on fire. Can you see the flame? Yeah.
That’s the 911 call Thursday night after a house on Highway 55 caught fire, trapping several animals inside.
Officials said more than half of the house was damaged and two people were left homeless.
Can you hear your dog inside your house? Yeah. Don’t you know anyone who lives there? I don’t know.
Officials said the team was able to rescue three dogs, now named S’mores, and a cat. Unfortunately, the other pets did not survive.
Four fire departments responded to the scene, including the Fort Barnwell Volunteer Fire Department. News 12 spoke with Chief Greg Milligan, who was at the scene last night. He says this is not something they see every day.
This is not an everyday occurrence and I hope it is not. We ask everyone to replace their fire alarm batteries at least once, if not twice, a year.
Animal protection officials say they are not confirming or disclosing the number of animals lost at this time out of concern for the families.
