Paint trends come and go, but color dressing has proven to be incredibly timeless. And just in case you’re not already charmed by this stylish way to decorate with paint, Thea McGee just got it approved.
Color dressing (the continuous use of one paint color throughout a room, including woodwork and ceilings) has been gaining a lot of traction over the past year or so, and for good reason. Not only does it help create a cozy environment thanks to the cocoon effect, but it also acts as a way to capitalize on the dark paint trend for unexpected moments of color, and it’s the latter that Sia is in on. is.
We recently spoke to an interior designer to find out why color dressing is especially effective in small rooms. Read on for Shea’s take on this beloved paint trend, which we expect to see more of next year.

“I love the color trenching effect and I love using dark colors in small spaces because I think that’s the best surprise,” Shea told H&G.
“These spaces don’t have a lot of room to wow with something big, like a rug or a large piece of art,” the designer added. “And the big thing you can do is cover the surfaces of the room in dramatic color.”
Rooms like powder rooms, pantries, and utility rooms are often the least attractive rooms in the house and can be messy to decorate with paint ideas because their functional purpose should take precedence. This is a good way to avoid becoming space.
Additionally, small rooms create unexpected moments of color when filled with bold colors, especially if the main room throughout the home is neutral. “Everyone’s home style is different, but many of our homes incorporate neutrals into the main spaces,” Shea added. “So I feel like when you walk through your home, having these surprises gives you that experience of walking through your home.”

When it comes to choosing the right colors for your colorful scheme, the options are endless. However, currently, dark paint, which creates a slightly moody atmosphere, has become mainstream.
“One thing we are specifying even more than before is a rich brown paint color,” Shea added. “The standard was always deep blue, like navy or dark green.”
Noticing a shift from the previously hugely popular dark blues and greens, Shea is a fan of the rich chocolate browns that have been at the top of color trends lately. These shades look sophisticated and noble and are a great alternative to harsh black.
So, if you’re looking for an on-trend paint color for a colorful scheme, dark brown is a great choice. Dark brown is technically a neutral color, so it feels a little easier to decorate than more saturated tones.
