Detroit Mercy is currently 2-9-3 on the season and 1-2-3 in the Horizon League. The Titans recently lost 4-1 to No. 9 Western Michigan on Tuesday night and tied 1-1 with Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday, Oct. 19.

The Wright State men’s soccer team defeated Bellarmine 3-2 on Tuesday night with goals from Connor Osterholt, Cole Werthmuller and Giorgos Petousis. WSU finished the night with nine shots to Bellarmine’s 14, but led with six shots on target to Knight’s four. For the Raiders, Bellarmine had six with two corner kicks and Knight had three with two saves.
Edwin Espinal-Hervia led the Raiders with two shots, one of which was on target. Brian Burkett and Henry Hutchinson each had one shot on goal, while Felix Ezekwuka and Jack Jenkins had one each. Goalkeeper Alessandro Marterell played the full 90 minutes and made two saves. Joining him in complete games were Brock Pickett and Samuel LaJord.
Player of the Week: Brock Pickett
Wright State University senior midfielder Brock Pickett was named the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 16. Pickett became the first Raider to win the HL weekly award after the 2021 season. He earned this honor after playing the full 90 minutes against HL opponent IU Indianapolis. The Bay Village, Ohio, native played a key role in allowing just two of his four total shots against IUI on goal.
Consecutive Player of the Week: Cole Werthmuller
Wright State forward Cole Werthmuller was named the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week on Monday, Sept. 30.
Werthmuller earned the honor by logging 115 minutes in two games and leading the Raiders to a 2-0 week. Wertmuller had four shots in two games, with three on target. He started that week and added the winning goal against Butler.
The Medina, Ohio, native earned his first weekly honor on Sept. 23. He played all 180 minutes in two games and was recognized for preventing a shutout loss and leading the team to ties against Eastern Illinois and HL opponent Milwaukee. In two games, the senior had 15 shots, six on target and three goals, all with headers.

The Raiders currently sit in a tie for fifth place in the Horizon League. They are tied with Northern Kentucky (1-1-4), IU Indy (2-3-1) and Milwaukee (2-3-1). Robert Morris (4-1-1) remains in first place with 13 points, followed by Oakland (3-1-2) with 11 points. Green Bay and Purdue Fort Wayne are tied for third place with 10 points and a 3-2-1 conference record. Below the Raiders are Detroit Mercy (1-2-3) with six points and Cleveland State (1-4-1) with four points.

The Raiders currently rank ninth in the nation in total goals scored (33). WSU ranks 16th in offensive efficiency (2.20), 6th in shooting accuracy (.506) and 38th in shots on goal per game (6.07). The Raiders had 33 goals and 29 assists, ranking 12th in the NCAA in total points (85) and 26th in points per game with 6.33.
Cole Worsuler ranks 18th in the nation with nine total goals on the season and ranks 26th in goals per game (.64).

United Soccer Coaches released its weekly rankings on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and Wright State is ranked No. 9 in the NCAA DI North. The Raiders hold a 5-3-2 record and previously received this recognition after shutting out Purdue Fort Wayne 4-0 and defeating Butler 3-2. Ta. The Raiders were just below fellow Horizon League member Green Bay, who held an overall record of 7-3-0.
Return of all-league talent
Wright State returns Horizon League All-Freshman team honoree Henry Hutchinson. At the end of his first season, Hutchinson started nine games and appeared in 13 of the team’s contests. He logged 720 minutes, logging 25 minutes or more in 10 games, and 60 minutes or more in seven of those games.
Introducing the coach
The Raiders are led by second-year head coach Alex van der Sluis. Van der Sluis joined Wright State as an assistant coach in April 2022 and was named head coach just one year later. He posted a 4-9-5 overall record and a 3-4-2 league record in his first season, leading the program to the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals. Joining Van der Sluijs on the sideline will be second-year assistant coach Chris Garcia and third-year assistant coach Adam Maloney.
Team introduction
WSU welcomes a number of newcomers, adding 18 players (nine freshmen and nine transfers) to its 32-man roster this season. Of the nine transfer students, three are second-year students and six are third-year students. The Raiders will return 14 players, including one redshirt freshman, five sophomores, two juniors, five seniors and one graduate student.

Wright State University welcomes players from around the world with 15 international student athletes on its 2024 roster. The 10 Raiders are from Europe, representing six countries: Great Britain, Northern Europe, Southern Europe and Western Europe. In addition, four athletes represent North American countries and one athlete comes all the way from Australia.
