The forgotten puppy, we call him the Candy Bar Puppy. They were the second pair of Husky Shepherd dogs brought to the shelter. But we have now given birth to our third child from this person.
Candy Bar Puppies – Almond Joy, Heath, Baby Ruth, Milky Way

It’s such a shame that their lives didn’t get off to a great start. They did not have the best nutrition or quality of life and had little socialization. They have been forgotten. They didn’t know how to be dogs or trust people. They didn’t learn to rely on others. They lived according to their survival instincts. The only person caring for them had forgotten about them.
I got him when he was about 5 months old. Eight of these puppies were in a litter. Unfortunately, we were only able to save 5 puppies. Two had medical concerns and one bit our volunteer out of fear. These decisions are not made lightly or without veterinarian input.

They were all vaccinated, dewormed, bathed, spayed, and neutered. The adorable puppies were named Hershey, Almond Joy, Heath, Baby Ruth, and Milky Way. Hershey is an adopted child and lives in Lincoln. In fact, he was in the shelter 19 weeks before he was adopted. He was the only brown husky, the most sociable of the five, and the largest. The remaining four have been at the shelter for approximately 447 days, or 64 weeks.
The four very fearful puppies that were forgotten required special attention and additional veterinary visits. They became very stressed in their new environment, which caused other concerns and problems. Once they were examined, they were separated and placed in their own kennels. They were all very similar in personality and behavior. Although it wasn’t intentional, they made each other’s insecurities even worse. What one person does, another person will also do. For example, if one person didn’t eat, everyone didn’t eat. We ended up splitting them into different rows and ends within the room. This helped reduce their anxiety and they began to develop their own personalities.
I believe Almond Joy is the leader of the pack, or so he thinks. He also underwent obedience and agility sessions. He was very scared at first but recovered enough to sit and stay. He also went through tunnels, through weaving sticks, walked on planks, and over jumping ramps. But he didn’t climb into the A-frame. He eats well and still receives treats from us, but only if he likes the treats. He is very particular and has come a long way.
Milkyway is the clown of the four. He underwent obedience and agility training sessions. He was very scared at first. I have to say he has shown the most growth. He learned to heal, sit, stay, and lie down. During agility, he weaved through tunnels, weaved around poles, over jumps and climbed onto A-frames. But he wouldn’t walk the plank. When we took pictures of him, he lay motionless even when others walked on or over him. He eats a lot and will come to the front of the kennel for a few seconds to meet new people. He will also receive treats from several volunteers. He’s not as picky as AJ about the taste of his snacks.
Baby Ruth, the only female in the group, and Heath, the last male, are very similar in almost every way, including color. They are both followers and make friends with all the other dogs. They didn’t go through obedience training because it was too stressful. They continue to face anxiety.
However, they are now more mature and show less stress. Although they have kind hearts, they do not yet completely trust everyone. They eat Kongs, tennis balls, and rope toys. Their toys should be very hard chew toys. They love playing in the water.
These dogs do not have average bones in their bodies. They are unique and beautiful. They are very suspicious and will bark when scared. They are very smart and fun to watch. An example of this is when we open their kennel and the door to the outside, they take themselves to the park. When it’s time to go back inside, we just open the park gate and they run all the way inside and into their kennels. AJ sometimes gets naughty and leaves the group, but he always comes back.
I had a few offers, but unfortunately the homes were not suitable for dogs with high anxiety who are very independent and love playing with other dogs. They are smart and learn quickly. They would make great dogs for farms and ranches. They would be great if you want to add a dog to your quiet home. They don’t seek much affection. They just want to be taken care of and are still learning to be dogs. I believe these 18 months old adorable dogs have a home somewhere. They should be remembered and not forgotten.
